Central Snark

So here I sit, presumably pulling a post together for the Saturday Spin which runs clear through to Monday. My husband has just pointed out this evening that I am indeed a procrastinator. What is his point? That instead of writing this post that features the band SPOON, I have checked out several design blogs, one “news” blog that talked about David Beckham having cheated on his wife with their nanny, and taken a quiz to test my latino celebrity knowledge. Come on – most latinos wouldn’t know those fakakta answers!

Also I should point out that we are in Holiday mode in my household celebrating Rosh Hashanah and welcoming in the Jewish New Year of 5768 (put that way, I suddenly feel older) and just being reflective and eating. And reflecting…as we eat so that we should have the strength to reflect some more. So Shanah Tovah to all who celebrate!

Now let’s get back on track. Whenever I hear this band on the radio, I think it’s another band. Then I think – they’re pretty cool, why not feature them on a Spin? So with several bands piling up in the queueue, what the heck? They’re an indie band from Austin Texas (I’d love to visit Austin for their music scene alone). The guitarist/vocalist and drummer formed the band in 1994 with a rotating cast of characters and have been described as an indie/punk hybrid. They have a bunch of albums/eps under their belt. This song, I Turn My Camera On is from their 2005 album, Gimme Fiction:

Over at their MySpace, you can hear songs from old albums and their current and sixth album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. You could also just have fun saying the album title. Or you could check out the band’s website. as you yourself reflect.

Whatever you do, have a good weekend doing it. Enjoy!

PS: Head on over to Humor-blogs.com where you may just hear a shofar. If not, ask if you can borrow a spoon.

This feature is long overdue and actually I’m long overdue to be out the door. A connundrum so early in the morning. Yes, today starts another semester of violin for my daughter so I’ll have to work on being a bit more prepared.

I’ll be brief:

His name is Ben Harper. He’s got a beautiful voice. He writes good music. Any questions?

Okay then, moving right along, check him out:

Let’s see what else I have up my sleeve — his MySpace. Oh and this one says that it is Ben’s SITE OFFICIEL. He’s not French, but it says official, albeit in another language and I don’t have time for fact checking.

Of course, if you really like his music, you’ll be able to find much more to your liking all over the web. Sorry, for the slipshod post, but I hope you enjoy his music and your weekend!

Tali, get your violinnnnn!!!!

spinning out of control once again

Head on over to the SITE OFFICIEL of Humor, Humor-Blogs.COM, I think they’re serving croissants today.

Reminder: Make sure you put on at least 30 SPF sunscreen before stepping on sand, even if it is a cloudy day. Only somebody very careless (and perhaps a tad stupid) would do so and risk sunburn. Ouch. Pass the aloe vera.

Okay, never mind sunburn; let’s listen to somebody whose music would shine through on any cloudy day – Kathleen Edwards, a Canadian singer/songwriter. In reviewing her debut album, Failer released in 2003, Blender Magazine said that Failer’s songs “possessed an indefinable pull that makes you love the characters they describe no matter how f*#&ed up (my kids watch the vids) they are.” I’d have to agree.

She’s been nominated for a Juno Award and the critics love her. She’s also been hailed as one of the most distinctive upcoming songwriters. Hey, no pressure or anything Kate.

This song featured in the video is In State from her last album released, Back to Me (2005). Just a quick link to her site, where a click on the “Music” tab will lead you to more of her wonderful music. I’m a little partial to One More Song the Radio Won’t Like from her Failer album.

Here’s her MySpace, which has a song or two.

Have a great weekend. I’m heading out to our favorite beach spot tomorrow with the family for a little vacation. I of course have surf shirts, SPF 30 shirts, hats and SPF 50 because we certainly don’t want to get any more burned!

PST: Speaking of characters that pull you in, head on over to Humor-blogs.com where the sun never burns (but the humor scorches).

This could be a new tradition – take off on Snuppy’s Friday post. Did somebody mention pornography?

Okay, I’ll be quick because I’m supposed to be embarking on a little weekend visit and I think I said that I left already (in my head where I am always on time and not stressed, I did leave). Not to worry, this will be quick.

Allright, simmer down – it’s not really porn – better, The New Pornographers, hereinafter referred to as TNP, a very cool band from Canada (well specifically Vancouver, British Columbia). Those Canadians. TNP are not new to the music scene – they formed in 1997 and have some great music to check out. Actually, if you hit the link above, their gallery has plenty right there. And of course, the ole reliable, MySpace. Sometime member or guest of TNP is Neko Case, who has her own wonderful catalogue of music.

The song featured in the video is Use It from their 2005 album, Twin Cinema:

I don’t know, that’s catchy. I’m late already and it takes so little time to download…

Okay, short, sweet and I’m outa here. Have a great weekend all!

PS: Head on over to Humor-blogs.com where Humor is the new pornography.

Gotta have more cowbell baby! by Snuppy

pretty cowbellTradition! Tradition!

We have a little tradition around here whereby I spin some music on the weekend and on Monday, Neva a/k/a Snuppy a/k/a Crazy Aunt Beatrice, a/k/a Bobo’s honey — oh and always k/a my NBFF, puts together what has come to be known as a Musical Opposites/Cheap Laughs post. Do not be mislead, dear reader, as the posts are are all brilliant in their own comic genius or just plain oddness quotient.

I just happen to have a small sampling of this fine fine tradition, which can be viewed HERE, and HERE, as well as HERE.

Now Snuppy has succumbed to a blogger flu which has been sweeping our little circle and has hit her especially hard. Did you not read above that she is my NBFF? Should I not want her to get better and live and be well so that we may enjoy a TGSNWM at our local coffee establishment together? Should I stop being selfish and just chip in and do an extra post? I heard that Diesel!

ferrell needs cowbellYes I should!  Mostly I have Chris C. of Nothing to See Here to thank for it as he left a very funny seemingly non sequitur of a comment in my Spin over the weekend. Ah Chris, Chris — you tried to stump us. Something about it rang a cowbell, but I had to google to recall the hilarity of this skit on SNL by someone who is often genius but usually always hits the oddness quotient, Christopher Walken.

Without further adieu, let me know what you think – more cowbell?

Oh, and don’t forget to grab your cowbell and head on over to Humor-blogs.com and play it right by Diesel’s ear. Tell him Bruce Dickenson sent you.

Here’s a couple of things about me:

I’m crazy for a good pop hook and I feel like crap this past week.

Don’t you feel you know me all the better now?  Good.   For anyone entering TheSnark actually looking for well, snark, don’t be alarmed.  Remain calm as it will return in all its snarkery on Monday.  On the weekend, I give everyone (read Snuppy a/k/a Crazy Aunt Beatrice – who is so not crazy but funny), a break and just spin a tune.  Hopefully the tune I spin is something that you a) might enjoy b) might not have heard previously or c) reminds you of something that you may need to do.

Today, spotlight is on Belle & Sebastian – not the television show, but the group who named themselves after one (a French one about a boy and his dog – awwww).  Actually, this band has been around for the past decade.  They are quite the folk/pop kings in the UK and certainly have made their way over here as well.  Every time I hear them on the radio, I think – “I have to put them on a spin.”  Then I forget.

The group was started by Stuart Murdoch while a student in University in Scotland as a school project, and they gained a bit of popularity.  I wonder what his grade was?  Not important.  They have been likened to Donovan (I hear a bit of T-Rex myself). But they’ve definitely got the UK sound going.   Actually, the group is taking a little hiatus right about now, but with ten years of archives, there’s plenty of music to appreciate.

Like this song, Blues are Still Blue from their 2006 album, The Life Pursuit:

Hopefully this reminded you to separate your whites and maybe go to the laundromat because apparently there’s all sorts of fun going on there.  Children, do not try this at home.   And do you really want to clean up after somebody stuffs a tree into your washing machine at home?  Yeah, me neither.

So amigos, have a good weekend and head on over to Humor-blogs.com where they’ll wash and fold your laundry or laugh in your face when you ask them.

When you don’t feel well, nothing sounds good. Everything sucks. It’s not even major not feel well – just general schva – throat a little soar, headachey, etc.

Okay boohoo for me, on with the spin. Sorry Sea Wolf for the very uninspired intro, but you’re on your own today. Actually all the information that I can find about SeaWolf is that they are a band from California whose debut ep, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low came out this past May. Their first full album is due out in September. So that’s what I know, take a look:

and just a listen:

Sorry, Diesel no Scorpions this week (although in looking back those were some good songs). I will, however, throw in a little Deep Purple for Scissors who will be seeing them next week. Quit yer complainin’, it was shorter than Smoke on the Water:

Head on over to Humor-blogs.com where there’s a groovy party just like the one in the video every day!

Have a great weekend!
