Smart Snarks? by Snuppy

NO one feels especially smart and/or clever on Monday mornings. Well, no one who’s currently in the process of writing this post, anyway. So one of us was only mildly alarmed when we perused an excellent blog* one of us really enjoys reading, and were linked to A “JUICY” SITE that provides a way to actually measure a few interesting things related to content, including, but not limited to, the overall level of intelligence contained within any given blog. We’re not sure if this means anything, but we thought it would be fun to “do the math” on the Snark Park, nonetheless. Here’s what we learned:

Thus far we’ve managed to crank out a total of 2465 2686 words.**

We average 8.96 8.89 words per sentence.

Of those words:

  • 1690 1824 have 1 syllable
  • 521 571 have 2
  • 178 202 have 3
  • and 76 89 have 4 or more!

That last one really impressed us, because we didn’t even know we knew 4 syllable words! Ultimately, we average 1.45 1.46 syllables per word. Hey, we may be chatty, but we use the big guns sparingly.

Furthermore, we garnered a score in something called a “Flesch Reading Ease” of 75.21 74.09, (ideal is around 60-70) and a “Flesch-Kincaid Grade” of 5 5.13, which means, basically, we’re writing at a 5th Grade level. That’s right. Fifth Grade. You’d think we’d be embarrassed, but you would be wrong grossly underestimating our response to the situation.

Now it’s your turn to find out where your blogs fit into all of this and/or tell us what you scored. Go on… just type your URL HERE, and see what you come up with. Oh, and while you’re over there? Would you mind reading up on these “tests”? And then, could we prevail upon you to come back and explain to the rest of us what the hell they mean? Because we really are fascinated, just not enough to actually find out for ourselves. Oh, and for godssake, when you do tell us about it, be sure to use small words as many monosyllabic descriptive terms as you’re qualified to incorporate into your explanation. Otherwise… you’ll lose us there’s a distinct possiblity we won’t be capable of processing the information properly.

*many thanks to MOM-101, from whom we totally ripped off this idea. Someone should go over there and try to get her to come over here… for she is an amazing blogger, and a lot of fun to read. We’d try, but she already knows what we look like, and we’re afraid she might slam her imposing blog-door in our face again.

**we earnestly plan to update throughout the day to see if we can in a passionately fervent desire to enhance our scores aggregate tallies.

Confirmation of what I already knew…my blog requires about a 4th grade education to fully comprehend – sounds about right.

oops… I was looking at Bobo’s numbers when I wrote “134” 4 syllable words… Sorry…

Comment by Pavel

Apparently I didn’t need a whole lot of convincing to come over here – and to take a look around, poke through the medicine cabinets and steal a gulp of tequila from the dining room while I was at it.

And I have to be honest, I didn’t even know I had a blog door, let alone one to slam. I thought I had the super take that thing off the hinges back when I first moved in.

Comment by Mom101

Mom-101: (may i call you that?) you’ve made my day! i’ve been wanting to invite you over here for quite a little while, but worried you would, indeed, laugh in my face! as for that door? well, i know it’s not really so imposing… what i should have said is that i just didn’t want to wait in line behind all your adoring fans and/or minions in order to gain entry to your lavish and tastefully decorated receiving room! and thanks for the inspiration today. i have a feeling you’ll believe me when i tell you it took me several minutes before i figured out that i didn’t actually have to “do the math” in order to calculate this stuff. needless to say, that came as quite a relief!

i hope you’ll come back, and often! as it is, you’ll now be officially added to our side-bar…oh, and with regards to that, shall we continue to use the formal “Mom-101”? or can we simply call you “Ma”? xoxo

Better the 4th grade than to be like mine – the kid in the end of the first trimester of his third grade year. Considering I’ve spent the past four years being a mom and the amount of time I get to talk to big people these days is quite minimal- its amazing that number isn’t smaller. 🙂

It seems for the most part, 4th graders will be right at home in our blogs. Except for today, where Sylvia Plath has taken over mine.

Comment by lamp twain

Snuppy – I laugh away as I read your accompanying score assessments, and that is why my blog is called Simply Said – why said in 4 syllables what you can say in 1 I ask? Gunning Fog Index? Is this a bleeding weather report?

Comment by lamp twain

Lamp Twain (good one): i loved your new post! and it certainly doesn’t surprise me that you’d score so well… at least your blog can be understood on the same level as TV Guide and Mark Twain. my “fog index” is so foggy it’s not even there! (maybe i’m like those “Golden Books” for kids?) xoxo

Comment by one snup, two snup, red snup, blue snup

Say what you want – but those Golden Books are highly understandable! Which reminds me of Tali’s first grade teacher Mrs. Friedman who would walk around the class and when a student gave a good answer (or it seemed that they had tried really hard) she would go up and shake their hand saying “Let me shake the hand of a highly intelligent young lady!”. The funniest thing was that Mrs. Friedman wasn’t much taller than some of her 1st graders, but she did introduce them to Shakespeare!

Comment by lamp twain

I love hearing about supportive teachers. I remember my 1st grade teacher (barely, but I do…no wisecracks necessary)as being warm and nurturing…although she did make me go sit in the coat closet once because she caught me out of my seat after telling the class to stay put. As I recall, I had gotten up to kiss the hand of a girl I had a crush on…talk about crashing and burning, yikes! Not much more humiliating than sitting in a closet…even a walk through.

Comment by BoBo

Awww, and he’s been kissing his fair maiden’s hand ever since huh Snuppy?

Yes Mrs. Friedman will go down in Tali’s scholastic history, she often insisted “This school is so easy, the last thing I actually learned or thought about was in Mrs. Friedman’s class!”. Well she got her wish a scholarship to a private school, oy vey, what are we in for!?

Comment by lamp twain

lamp twain: i’m just grateful he didn’t decide he liked it in there! as for Tali’s academic future? i’m guessing it’s only a matter of time before we’re all reaching for our dictionaries in order to read and/or comprehend her blog! xox

hah! I did that this morning via MOM 101, and found my score was about the same as hers.

Someone get me a t-shirt that says “I got me an English PhD and all I got was this lousy “you write at 5th grade level” report…”

Comment by joy

well apparently i use lots of big words but you only have to be in 4th grade to read them…because they are so readable (84.7).
wtf?
I say the colloquial aggregation of the substratiated nature which is so native to the vehemence of the vernacular instricts and prehibits the vescicles of an influential, nascent confluence of condundric, or rather, crepescular, crapola.

can i get an ‘AMEN’ on that?

Comment by FirstNations

A-A-men – 3 syllables!

Comment by lamp twain

Um, Amen, First Nations? Crepuscular Crapola may be my new blog subheading.

I just like the word “Fog” in a readability index. Which of the algorithms counts misspellings?

Comment by Walela

lamp twain (or is that lampuel clemmons?): i didn’t really have anything new to say, i just cracked myself up with that stupid pun. maybe that’s why this blog has such low scores, eh? low brow humor! (did i tell you how much Joel & i enjoyed that stupid movie, Talledega Nights yesterday? honestly, it was a hoot!) xoxox

verily, fellow linguists, perhaps it would be incumbent upon us to prehibit the vesicicles of th… you know, FirstNations, the only thing i understood in that sentence was “crapola”. which, of course, works for me! oh, and *bonus*! it’s 3 syllables… so, i say use it well and use it often!! (i know i plan to!) xox

Joy: or is that dr. joy? oh, wait… that’s the point! actually, if you like, i’ll print up your scores and have them framed for you, and you can hang it right next to your degree! xox

Penguin? since the Gunning Fog Index Crapola Thingy of this particular blog is only 7.89, i’d say you’ve done a nice job of kicking our easily comprehended asses! well done! and after a vacation, too… xox

am i the only one curious to see what the Amoeba’s score might be?

maman-101: (and, no, i don’t speak french, but, thanks to the internet, i can fake it with the best of ’em. that is as long as i use simple words, like “mom”) hmmmm? “9 times out of 10…” was that me? did i start something and not finish it again?? because 9 times out of 10 that’s what i do! of course, 10 times out of 10 times if i didn’t finish what i started it’s because i got involved in something really important and/or saw something shiny. xox

CYM: now that we know what level you’re really writing at, are we smart enough to keep reading you?? yikes! or should i say “Dios Mio!” (ya know, those Spanish words are a definite advantage… My God vs Dios Mio… you do the syllabic math!) as for a call??? now i feel THAT MUCH MORE GUILT for taking up all your telecommunicatory (i think i just made up a word here) minutes!!! aieeeee! (3 syllables, if you say that correctly) a call anytime from you is a treat, and i will welcome it with open arms and/or ears! xox

Comment by green eggs and snuppy

NO GUILT! PORFAVOR! And yes, DIOS MIO!

‘Tis my pleasure fo sho and you did not use it all up! Oh my! Many calls are always made and let me say that Loverboy is well equipped with the gift of gab as well! HE used up all MY minutes you see! FOR SHAME LOVERBOY! FOR SHAME!

Well, off to bed I go for it is late and there shall be yogis aknockin’ on my studio door tomorrow! Besos to one Seussalicious Woman! Sizzlin’!

Comment by Catty Yummy Mummy

CYM: buenos noches, dear BoheMian! by the way, my Seussical references are due to the fact that the aforementioned, highly admired, and insanely funny Mom-101 (aka “Maman-101”, who inspired today’s post) correctly pointed out that the closer one’s “Flesch Reading Ease” score is to 100, the more one’s writing was on par with Dr. Seuss (from a simplisitic standpoint, that is). since mine was *ahem* 84.28, it seemed fitting to re-work my moniker. sigh… as you can see, there are no original thoughts in my mind today. nary a one. xoxo
